How does grind size affect your brew?

Coffee brewing is an art, and one of the most crucial elements in crafting the perfect cup is grind size. Whether you prefer a bold espresso shot or a smooth French press brew, the size of your coffee grounds significantly impacts the flavor, extraction, and overall quality of your coffee.

The Role of Grind Size in Extraction

Extraction refers to how much flavor is pulled from coffee grounds when they come into contact with water. If the grind is too fine, the water extracts more compounds, which can sometimes lead to bitterness. If it’s too coarse, extraction is slower, resulting in weak or sour coffee. Finding the right grind size for your brewing method is key to achieving a balanced cup.

Finding the Perfect Balance

To brew coffee that’s rich, flavorful, and not too bitter or weak, adjusting the grind size is essential:

  • Too fine? Expect a bitter, over-extracted brew.
  • Too coarse? The result may be a weak, under-extracted cup.
  • Just right? A perfectly balanced, flavorful coffee experience.

Note that this is just a general guideline. A lot of variables will still come into play, such as roast level, bean origin, roast date, process, etc.

The next time you brew a cup, experiment with these factors along with different methods. Happy brewing!
